Mind Place: Question Masterpost

Here’s the masterpost for the Q&A for my Mind Palace post; this’ll be updated each time I answer a new question.
For your ease, I’ve broken things down into sections.
Please let me know if any of these links are broken/incorrect.
Creating a Palace
- I have several options and can’t pick which to use; what should I do?
- Could I make my palace completely imaginary with no outside reference?
- How do you visualise yourself anywhere? I can’t seem to get it.
- Would it be confusing to use my house? I’m worried I’ll get confused between what’s in my mind palace and what’s there in reality.
- How can you be sure you haven’t forgotten anything? Should I have a back-up palace?
- I find I tend to float through my palace, rather than walk. Is this a problem?
- I can’t understand why you need to be completely immersed inside your palace with no outside distractions. Do I have to do it that way?
- I share a room with someone. Do I use their side of the room as well?
- How do you envision pictures?
- I’m having a hard time visualising my palace. Any advice?
- Should I stay in one place until I can see the room clearly from that angle or should I keep walking around although it’s still a blur?
- I don’t spend much time in one place and don’t know my house well enough to feel comfortable using it. Should I use an imaginary palace?
- Should I draw out a diagram of my palace?
- Would it be possible to design and build my own palace from scratch or do I need a reference?
- Would it be possible to use something abstract, like a website, for my palace?
- Rather than seeing everything as if I was actually in there, I see myself walking around my palace. Is this a problem?
- Could an outdoors mind palace work?
- I want to use my office as my palace but I’m worried I won’t be comfy and/or it’s too complex for a beginner. Should I opt for my smaller, less organised, but comfier bedroom?
Structuring Your Palace
- Should I have furnishings?
- Could I make my palace completely imaginary so that the structure of my palace can be triggers?
- Should my palace be as detailed as my bedroom or would it be better to use my whole house?
- I can’t stay in my body; instead I watch myself walk around my palace. Is this a problem?
- How do you know when your palace is ‘built’ and not ‘under construction’?
- I have no visual memory; I can’t see things inside my mind. Could I still contruct a palace through detailed linguistic description?
- I have a lot of stuff. Can I just memorise my room with the shelf empty and the desk clear?
- How do I go about adding new rooms?
- Every time I enter my palace it re-decorates itself. I delete the re-decoration each time but it keeps happening. What should I do?
Storing Triggers
- It takes me a long time to store things. Should I worry?
- How do you store so much information in one room?
- Is it less effective if you place the thing you actually want to remember rather than a trigger?
- Can a mind palace also be used for systematic subjects? If so, how would you suggest I recall formuli? Contains a break-down of how I’d store the formula for glucose
- When storing, do you add triggers when you get to the right spot, or do you carry them with you until you get there?
- Is it viable to remember things as items and have pictures placed on a shelf which help remind me what the item’s for?
- If you’re following your route and you realise you need to add something which would only make sense if you had a stop or certain detail; would it interrupt the sequence enough to confuse you?
- How do you store something you’ve read? Do you remember it verbatim or just the general gist?
- How do you store things? I just can’t do it. A warning against using triggers which are too vauge
- Trigger wise, I’m not really sure what to use. Any advice?
- Should I store things I already know in my palace, or is it all built off new information?
- Does something need to be memorised before you store it - can I read something and store it or do I need to know the exact words?
- How do I use people as triggers?
- My triggers are taking up too much space; 12 objects are taking up a whole room. Am I doing it incorrectly? Contains a suggested trigger for 3 of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry
- I’ve created my palace but the idea of storing anything terrifies me. How do I overcome that?

Reviewing and Searching
- How long does it take you to review? Contains Guide to Reviewing
- Do I have to walk through the whole building when searching, or can I go straight to the room I need?
- Would it help to write down where everything is before and/or after my route around my mind palace?
- I tend to talk when I’m thinking. Would talking help me nagivate around my palace when searching?
- Should I take the same route through the house every time, or just enter from the same place?
- I start in the street outside my palace. Is this a problem? Should I just drop myself inside my actual palace?

- Have you any tips for a first timer using a palace for an exam?
- Have you any tips for using a palace to learn a language?
- Your examples seem to be small facts or general ideas. Can I use a palace to remember long lists of specific things?
- Improving vocabularly: Could my palace be a blank wall upon which I could put words with an object that triggers the meaning?

- Every time I go into my palace I get intense, involuntary REM and it freaks me out. Help!
