Question

gypia asked: Just a quick thing I've found to control my walking pace through my palace (instead of levitating quickly through) is having my fingers do a walking motion that I can mimic within the palace. A little more experimentation found that mimicing other actions with my hands like setting something down solidifys and grounds the action. Makes me look just a little more insane while doing it publicly but memory superpowers seems to be worth it.

Thanks for this! Hopefully it’ll help others. Hope everything’s ok down your end, hun.

Question with 5 notes

Anonymous asked: Mind Palace question! If you wanted to memorise, say, the bones of the hand. How would you do that? I find it very difficult to imagine a suitable trigger that would lead me to the memory.

Phoebe from Friends (phalanges) wearing football boots (metacarpals), the wrist splint (carpals), a t-shirt featuring Zoidberg’s head with the words ‘hey, mate!’ in a trapezium-shaped box beneath (distal row – trapezoid, capitate, trapezium, and hamate); she’s wet herself, darkening the design on her pyjama bottoms – a pattern featuring the moon and two stars. She’s leaning on a small section of a scaffold tube, as one would a cane. (proximal row - pisiform, lunate, triquetral and scaphoid)

Reasons:

  • Phoebe always gave ‘Regina Phalange’ as a fake name
  • Footballers often break their metatarsals
  • The wrist splint reminds me of carpal tunnel syndrome; also serves as a reminder that the hand equivalent to the metatarsals is metacarpals
  • ‘Zoid’ in both Zoidberg and trapezoid
  • Capitate similar to decapitate
  • Trapezium is also a shape
  • Hamate/Hey mate – sound identical
  • Piss/Pisiform – sound alike
  • Moons kicks off Lunar which leads to Lunate – sound alike
  • The triad pattern gives triquetral
  • Scaffold/Scaphoid – sound alike.

That’s how I do it. Hope it gives you some ideas. :)

Question

Anonymous asked: Hi! Thank you so much for your mind palace tutorials! I have just one question: when you enter your mind palace do you see it like you see reality, or you just don't see anything (because your eyes are closed) but you know exactly where every single trigger and object is? 'Cause I can do the later, but I can't see things as I see reality. Thanks :D

No problem at all; ta!

It depends, actually. Most of the time I can see everything, like in reality, and other times I don’t ‘see’ anything, and it’s more like the latter. I think both tiredness and time plays a part - the less of it I allow myself, the more likely it is to be the latter.

Either way, I wouldn’t worry. As long as it’s doing the job I reckon you’re alright. :)

Question with 1 note

one-in-particular asked: I saw your mind palace tutorial (it was very impressive btw) but I have exams in a week so could I use one to store the information? Or is it a horrible idea and I should listen to the tutorial?

Oh mate, I really don’t think you’ve got time. I think you’re so close to your exams that your efforts are best put into your usual study techniques; then you can build a palace for the next round of exams. I don’t want you fucking up because of an inadequate palace.

Good luck!

Question with 3 notes

Anonymous asked: Do you use your memory palace for things other than studying - like general knowledge and facts? And if so, what kinds of things? I'm intrigued...

I do indeed! I tend to get bored really easily so learning new things keeps me from descending into dark moods; I store a lot of random things which I find particularly interesting or useful. Odd bits are going into different rooms constantly, but aside from studying I’d say my most-used rooms are:

The Hospital Wing - I read medical textbooks for fun so I put a lot in there; usually first-aid things and anatomy. I adore anatomy.

The Room of Requirement - this is where I shove anything I only need temporarily, like shopping lists.

The Quidditch Pitch - I’m a boxer so I tend to record a lot of tips and exercise routines here.

Storing things is second nature now. I really don’t know how I managed before I built Hogwarts.

Question with 1 note

neon-weekend asked: hey about your mind palace stuff, i was wondering, if it were possible to trigger a melody, like a short piece of music? or is it impossible to trigger music/sounds? your blog is fantastic by the way! thanks for the information about mind palaces.

another question, so do you like put a trigger of something you need to remember/study straight away as soon as you think you need to store it, or whats the go with that? thanks by the way :3

1. I’ve never tried it, but I don’t see why not. Give it a go and see.

2. That’s up to personal choice. You might find it easier to study something first and place it in your palace later, or you might prefer to put something in as soon as you’ve read it. I’d suggest beginning with the former and progressing to the latter as you get used to creating triggers, but if you prefer the former then stick with it. It’s all up to personal preference so there’s no real way to do this incorrectly.

However, (if you do go for the latter) I would advise against storing things from a lecture while the lecture’s still taking place. It’s better to note down whatever it is you want to store along with your instinctual trigger and actively store everything afterwards; otherwise you risk missing the next part of the lesson if you hit an unexpected stumbling block.

And thank you! :)

Question with 2 notes

Anonymous asked: i'm not sure if this as been asked already but in your mind palace post you say "you have to be concious you are storaging". With this you mean to actually imagine myself carring the items and putting them where I want? (sorry about the english, it is not my language and I'm a bit rusty)

Your English is excellent! :)

Not at all. By that I just meant that you have to store something in your palace purposefully - you can’t hope to use it to remember something you haven’t placed in there.

If it helps you to imagine yourself carrying the triggers in then do so, but you don’t have to. I just add things in by having them appear there, if that makes sense.

Question with 3 notes

Anonymous asked: something that might be useful- my brother and i are working on building our mind palaces right now, and since he's always been very visual, he's found it's been immensely helpful to design and build his palace in the sims as he expands it. it lets him add color triggers and item triggers easily, and since they remain there, it's impossible for him to forget anything. obviously you can't bring your sims game to an exam or something, but it might be helpful for while you're first building.

Question with 6 notes

Anonymous asked: I was just wondering about the whole mind palace thing, you said it was called the Method of Loci, do you know if it is pronouned 'low-kee' or 'low-see'?

The former. Like this guy -

EDIT: itpretentious reckons it’s ‘Low-kuy’, as in ‘guy’. I’ve never personally heard it pronounced that way but I’m always happy to admit the possibility of being wrong. It’s most probably a case of personal preference, like pronouncing the ‘t’ in Descartes.

Question with 4 notes

dreamsofadventures asked: Hello Hello :D First of all, thank you for the Mind Palace post ! It's very useful. As I want to be an architect and visualizing imaginary is quyite easy, I actually did a real mind Palace. (It's big ! xD ) And it's working ! But I really need to be in a mood to see it. And I wondered how to use it in an exam. Because I really need to be calm and have a bit of music. And to be sitting in a specific way. (And it'll be a bit of weird in class) Hope, I'm not annoying you ! Thnaks again =)

Hullo and congratulations on the massive mind palace; that’s awesome!

I think you’re just gonna have to practice and not worry if you look a little strange; after all, your grades matter, not their opinions. Try it in stages - firstly entering without the music and once you’ve managed that try it without your usual position. Or vice versa.

In terms of calming before your exam (and so be calm enough to enter your palace), it personally helps me to have a routine. I’ve kept the same pre-exam routine for five years and I’ve never had a freak out in the hall. So whatever makes you calm, try to engross yourself in that in the hour leading up to the exam rather than attempting to cram, which will just stress you out further.

While you’re sitting the exam, if you begin to panic or your attention starts to drift it can help to take a second out and repeat a phrase to yourself, such as ‘I am focused’, in order to pull yourself back into the game.

It can sometimes be easier, in essay exams, to enter your palace, scribble everything you need on the paper and then write your essay without needing to keep popping in and out. But that’s up to you. :)

I’d also suggest having an early night followed by a breakfast which mixes slow-release carbs with high protein - eggs on wholemeal toast with a glass of OJ, for example. Perhaps a banana or a handful of raisins before you enter the exam hall and always take a bottle of water in with you; studies have shown those who remain hydrated achieve higher marks than their classmates.

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.
